Independent Police Oversight in Santa Rosa, CA
The City of Santa Rosa is committed to giving residents a voice in how they are policed and maintaining trust and legitimacy with the police department and invites residents to share comments and feedback about policing in Santa Rosa with the Independent Police Auditor (IPA), OIR Group.
The Independent Police Auditor (IPA) reviews Police Department personnel complaint investigations, takes personnel complaints about the Police Department from people who do not feel comfortable going directly to the Police Department, and interacts with community members and organizations.

Support Independent Community Board for Civilian Oversight of SRPD
An independent body made up of city residents to publicly and transparently dialogue with the SRPD on an ongoing basis regarding the department's policies, procedures, training, hiring practices, and initiatives is important for the health of our community. An independent board is win-win to build transparency, trust and collaboration between community and police benefiting the public safety of all.

We need to increase community involvement in police.
The planned community meetings to be held in Santa Rosa by the City’s contracted police auditors is a welcome step to improving dialogue and understanding. We need to understand how their work will improve response and training of the SRPD. What is lacking is on-going civilian oversight of the Police. Twice yearly “feedback sessions” while useful, do not provide the monitoring and accountability for implementation of improvements of police response and the auditors that is the goal we should be striving for. We need the Council to direct the City Manager to implement a Council-appointed Civilian Police Oversight Board. Please consider educating police officers about harassment of un sheltered folks. Trespassing citations are a barrier to housing

Civilian oversight is a necessary component of any commitment to "independent" oversight of police department policy and actions.
Community members should be appointed by each city council member to represent the citizens in their district.

An Independent Community Board is a Vital and Necessary Component of Civilian Oversight for SRPD!
Santa Rosa residents and folks who work/visit there deserve an independent body made up of community members to publicly and transparently dialogue with the SRPD on the department's policies, procedures, training, hiring practices, and initiatives. OIR needs to work with the city to create this kind of community engagement body.
